What is SEDEX Certification?
SEDEX
SEDEX stands for Supplier Ethical Data Exchange. It is a non-profit organization which enables companies to efficiently manage their ethical and responsible practices of their global supply chains, generating transparency through the provision of a data exchange. SEDEX also provides a web-based database which enables suppliers to share ethical data, such as ethical audit reports, with their customers. Likewise, customers can keep track of their suppliers and view the ethical reports shared with them.
SMETA
SMETA stands for SEDEX Members Ethical Trade Audit. It is a social auditing methodology, enabling businesses to assess their sites and suppliers to understand working conditions in their supply chain. SMETA is designed to help auditors conduct high quality audits that encompass all aspects of responsible business practice, covering SEDEX’s four pillars of labor, health and safety, environment, and business ethics.

Following is the steps in an SEDEX audit,
- Submit a self-evaluation form: All applicants are required to complete a self-evaluation form before we begin with our SEDEX audit. Forms are filled out by the sites to be audited.
- Conduct a SEDEX audit on site: Our auditors visit the sites to be audited. An auditing team assesses the extent to which your social management documentation meets the SMETA criteria. The duration of any given audit depends on the number of employees and locations.
- Issue a report and CAPR: Once the SEDEX audit is done, our auditors create a corrective action plan for you along with a detailed audit report (SMETA Report & CAPR), which you can now upload to the SEDEX database.
The different types of SEDEX membership reflect the different types of organizations in global supply chains.
- Buyer (A) membership is for organizations that only wish to view and run reports on their supply chain. Membership fees are determined by annual sales turnover
- Buyer/Supplier (AB) membership is for organizations that wish to view and run reports on their supply chain and share information with their customers. Membership fees are determined by annual sales turnover
- Supplier (B) membership is for organizations that wish to share information with their customers.
